Accurate hill slope measurement is very easy.  It requires some simple materials and a calculator.

Materials

Two wooden stakes at least 18 inches long.

Three feet of twine, string or wire

Tape measure

Small level

Rubber mallet

Set-up

Tie the string around the top of each wooden stake at equal distances from the top.

Measurement Method

Pound one stake at the top of the hill.  Pound the second stake down the hill so the string is taught.  Use the level to make sure the stakes are vertical and the string is straight and level with the ground.  That is, place the level along each stake and on the string.  Make adjustments until both the stakes and the string are level.

Now measure the length of the string between the two stakes.  Write this down as String.  Then measure the height of the top stake from the string to the lowest point sticking out of the ground.  Write this down as Top Stake Height.  Then measure the bottom stake in the same way and write this down as Bottom Stake Height.  Then measure the distance between the two stakes along the ground and write this down as Ground Length.

Make the measurements in inches, and round down or up if you just want an estimate.

Slope Calculation

Follow this procedure for each measurement.  Once all of the measurements are converted, use the steps below to calculate the slope of the hill.

Step 1: Calculate the height difference:

Height difference = Bottom Stake Height —Top Stake Height

Step 2: Calculate the slope.  This is a ratio that indicates the steepness of the hill.

Slope (H/L)= Height Difference divided by String Length

Read the hill’s angle of elevation from the table below.
