Khet 2.0 Review: If you enjoy Chess, you will absolutely love Khet the Laser Game. The new 2.0 game is smaller, lighter and more portable than the original Khet Laser Game.

The game is for two players. Most of the pieces have mirrors (Pyramids and Djeds). Each player has a Sphinx piece that contains the laser. Pieces are moved one space at a time or rotated 90 degrees on each player’s turn. After moving or rotating one piece, the player fires the laser. The object of the game is to illuminate (i.e. kill) your opponent’s Pharaoh piece. The laser always travels in straight lines and at 90 degree angles by banking off mirrors. Mirrored pieces may be used to protect your Pharaoh. Pyramids (mirrored on one side) and other pieces not having mirrors (Obelisks) may be removed from the game by illuminating them. Each player has one very powerful Djed piece that is mirrored on both sides so it cannot be removed from the game. The Djed piece is the only piece that may swap places with other game pieces.

The game develops strategic thinking because not only do you have to figure out how to kill your opponent’s Pharaoh, but you also have to simultaneously protect your Pharaoh without accidently killing it with your own laser!

The original Khet game is no longer available (except maybe on eBay). The main differences between the original game and the new one are: 1) the size/weight; the new game is smaller and lighter 2) the new Sphinx pieces allow the lasers’ origins to be moved around the board instead of in two fixed locations like the original game and 3) the original game had two add-ons, a tower that allowed the beam to be sent up to a second story playing field and then back down and a beam splitter piece. Hopefully Khet will create add-ons for Khet 2.0, too. The original Khet add-ons are not compatible with the new Khet 2.0.
